Women with genes for endometriosis have higher risk of ovarian cancer
Donna Lu 16/03/2022...Women with genes that predispose them to endometriosis also have a higher risk of developing certain ovarian cancers, new research suggests. A study of genetic markers in nearly 15,000 women with endometriosis and more than 25,000 women with ovarian cancer

“We have estimated that the odds of having ovarian cancer over a lifetime is up to 2.6 times higher for women carrying genetic risk factors for endometriosis,” said the study’s lead author, Dr Sally Mortlock of the University of Queensland.

The genetic link was specific to certain kinds of epithelial ovarian cancer – the most common category, which accounts for an estimated 90% of cases. Endometriosis – a condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus also grows outside the uterus – affects an estimated one in 10 women of reproductive age. Click here The Guardian

Ardern confirms the unvaccinated will eventually be welcome in NZ, but 'we haven't made those decisions'
Zane Small 16/03/2022..Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed unvaccinated travellers will eventually be welcomed to New Zealand, but "we haven't made those decisions today".

Her comments came after the Government's announcement that the international border will reopen to Australians from April 12 and visa waiver tourists from May 1 but two COVID-19 tests will be required during their trip.

While tourists will not have to isolate, they will need to submit evidence of a supervised pre-departure rapid antigen test (RAT) result, and will be asked to self-isolate according to the Government's rules if they test positive for COVID-19 while in New Zealand. At the moment, we're asking for a supervised rapid-antigen test," Ardern said on Wednesday. Tamatoa de Emperor: True that. So whats the difference between a Mandates here in NZ who lost there job and unvaccinated travellers welcomed into New Zealand just saying Click here News-hub

Why deaths are increasing as COVID cases trend down
Ireland Hendry-Tennent 16/03/2022..The Ministry of Health has revealed why deaths are increasing even as COVID-19 cases fall.  There were 19,542 new cases in the community and 971 people in hospital with COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The Ministry also announced 24 new COVID-related deaths - eight of whom died on Tuesday. The remainder died over the past three weeks and have only just been reported by local authorities due to changes to reporting.

It comes after two deaths were announced on Tuesday. The Ministry of Health says despite cases starting to trend down, more people are dying. At this point in the outbreak, we are seeing increasing numbers of people dying with Omicron. Sadly, this trend is not unexpected, and our thoughts are with the families of these people. Nuts and seeds can reduce your risk of heart disease - here's how to add them to your diet
Lana Andelane 16/03/2022..Eating as little as three to four handfuls of nuts and seeds a week can decrease the risk of heart disease by around 20 percent, according to new advice issued by the Heart Foundation.

Nuts and seeds make a highly nutritious snack, packed with healthy fats, fibre, protein and a wide range of essential micronutrients. Consuming nuts and seeds regularly as part of a healthy diet helps to lower the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often referred to as 'bad cholesterol'. High levels of LDL cholesterol can raise a person's risk for both heart disease and stroke.

Too much 'bad' cholesterol can lead to a build-up inside the blood vessels, which are responsible for carrying blood and oxygen around the body. Known as 'plaque', this build-up causes lumps of hard fat to form on the walls of the blood vessels. Click here News-hub

New forensics technology can detect blood specks on dark clothing within seconds
Nina Massey 16/03/2022..Forensics scientists are now able to spot tiny specks of blood on dark clothing in a matter of seconds, sometimes resulting in crucial evidence.

Traditional methods, which have been used for 100 years, involve hours of painstaking examination but the new technology means suspects can be quickly identified or eliminated in a murder investigation, for example.

An increasing number of violent crimes in London are being committed by people wearing dark clothing and blood needs to be found rapidly for DNA testing. Developed by the Metropolitan Police, the new infrared (IR) technology speeds up the process, spotting blood almost immediately in some circumstances, even if it is less than a millimetre in diameter. Plans to record mothers’ drinking habits on baby health records scrapped
Ella Pickover 16/03/2022..Proposals to include a pregnant woman’s drinking habits on her child’s medical record have been ditched, campaigners said. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) said it opposed National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (Nice)

The plans, part of Nice’s Quality Standard on the diagnosis and assessment of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), prompted a backlash. Campaigners said the plans would have infringed on a woman’s right to privacy and denied pregnant women the ability to have a frank and confidential conversation with her midwife about alcohol.

We welcome the decision by Nice to drop proposals to automatically transfer any alcohol consumption reported by a pregnant woman to her child’s medical records. It is absolutely staggering that these measures were ever suggested by Nice in the first place. Click here Independent

Pharmac strikes deal which will see Kiwis gain access to medicine for lung and ovarian cancer, severe asthma

Ireland Hendry-Tennent 16/03/2022..New Zealand's drug funding agency has struck a deal with AstraZeneca which will see Kiwis gain access to medicines used to treat lung and ovarian cancer and severe asthma.

Pharmac secured an agreement with drug-maker AstraZeneca for new discounts on three medicines Pharmac already buys, an extension of medicine for ovarian cancer meaning more people can get it and new medicines to treat people with a severe form of asthma and stage-three lung cancer.

Every year, about 1800 New Zealanders die from lung cancer and Māori are even more at risk. Māori are three times more likely than New Zealand Europeans to develop lung cancer and to die from it. The new agreement will see Pharmac purchase benralizumab. click here News-hub

Schools to receive rapid antigen tests from government
16/03/2022...Schools, kura and early learning centres will soon be able to opt-in to receive rapid antigen tests, the government has announced. In a statement, Education and Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins -

who himself has today tested positive for Covid-19 - said the move was aimed at keeping schools and early learning centres open where possible. Feedback I have received from the education sector is that greater access to rapid antigen testing could help them to do that," he said.

The Ministry of Education currently has several hundred thousand tests to hand and will receive nearly a million more over the next week to be distributed through its regional offices. Schools, kura and early learning services can opt-in to receive a supply of tests.  Click here RNZ news

Horticulture group calls on Govt to reduce 'spiralling' cost of vegetables

Molly Swift 16/03/2022..At a time when our immune system needs all the nutrients it can get, vegetable prices are soaring. Horticulture New Zealand warns we are facing a vegetable crisis with spiralling production costs causing prices to increase and suppliers to shut down.

There is a crisis developing in commercial vegetable production in New Zealand," president Barry O'Neal says in a statement. Input costs have soared over the past 12 months, not the least being the cost of fuel.

Between December 2021 and March 2022, the cost of diesel increased from $1.67 a litre to $2.41 a litre, O'Neal notes, and there have also been significant cost increases for labour, seeds, fertilizer, freight and compliance. He warns all of this is putting growers in danger of going out of business. And if growers shut up shop, vegetable prices will increase further due to supply shortages.  Click here News-hub

North Korea's latest launch fails, says South

16/03/2022...North Korea has fired an "unknown projectile" which appeared to fail immediately after launch, South Korea's military said. The suspected missile was fired from an airfield outside the capital Pyongyang.

The airfield has been the site of several launches, including previous tests of what were the US alleges were intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). It comes as North Korea has in recent weeks stepped up its weapons testing.

"North Korea fired an unknown projectile from the Sunan area around 09:30 today, but it is presumed that it failed immediately after launch, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. And any explosion further up could risk debris falling on populated areas.

Tamatoa de Emperor: If kim fired a missile it means for the south korean he whats to talk. He's not following the international Law. Click here BBC news

Christopher Luxon says Govt still failing on cost of living as Labour accuses National of 'crocodile tears'

Ireland Hendry-Tennent 16/03/2022..Christopher Luxon says the Government's petrol tax cut is "good relief" but doesn't solve the much wider cost of living crisis. On Tuesday the Government announced it is slashing 25 cents per litre off fuel tax and halving public transport costs.

Other Government measures previously announced are also set to kick in, such as an increase to the benefit, minimum wage and Family Tax Credits in April, and the Winter Energy Payment in May. It comes after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern finally admitted the cost of living

Currently Kiwis are taxed 10.5 percent on each dollar earned up to $14,00 a year, 17.5 percent for $14,000 to $48,000 a year, 30 percent for $48,000 to $70,000 a year and 33 percent for $70,000 to $180,000 a year. Labour also introduced a new tax rate in 2020 of 39 percent for income over $180,000 a yearClick here News-hub

Avril Lavigne has to 'constantly fight' record labels to pursue musical vision

13/03/2022...Avril Lavigne has had to "always fight" against her record labels to pursue her desired musical direction for every album. The Sk8r Boi hitmaker has explored different sounds throughout her album cycles, from her 2002 debut Let Go to her recent seventh studio album, Love Sux.

In an interview with Alternative Press, Avril admitted that she has always had to fight for the direction she wants to pursue with each new record. I'm stubborn and strong-willed and strong-minded, and if I feel a certain way, I stick to it. I'm constantly fighting.

I had to fight my whole career to write the type of music I wanted to write," she said. "Sometimes labels would give me pushback and didn't understand my vision. I had to always fight, and fight on each album to keep going in the musical direction I wanted to go,. Click here Cover-news

Pakistani truck artist gives new flair to kicks

AFP 16/03/2022..Haider Ali dabs a brush with an iridescent glob of paint and gets to work on a pair of sparkling white trainers -- his latest canvas for a carnival of colour celebrating Pakistani culture.

Pakistan's lorries are renowned for "truck art": candy-coloured murals depicting South Asian animals, celebrities and religious icons. The tradition transforms the highways and cities into kaleidoscopic processions. The ideas keep coming to me," the 42-year-old mused.

And now Ali -- a veteran truck artist -- has transposed the painting onto sneakers. A client came to me from the US asking me to paint shoes," he explained. I told him an exorbitant fee to discourage him but he agreed, so I decided to get on with it. He labours on each pair for up to four days, charging select clients $400 . Click here AFP

Asian markets bounce as Hong Kong tech sees bargain-buying

AFP 16/03/2022..Asian markets saw a much-needed bounce Wednesday as Hong Kong's tech giants led a rally in the city after their recent rout, while oil prices rose back above $100 but remain pressured by concerns over demand from China.

However, while the gains are keenly welcomed, further volatility is expected as Russia presses ahead with its war in Ukraine and the Federal Reserve starts its campaign of interest rate hikes to fight inflation.

Both main contracts fell below $100 Tuesday as lockdowns in several big Chinese cities led to fears about the economy and demand in the world's biggest importer of the commodity. It's being publicly debated whether if you create a recession to push the number down to two percent, is that actually a policy error?" he added, referring to inflation. Click here AFP

Customs seize 700 kilograms of cocaine in shipping container from South America

16/03/2022..Increased police presence in Kaikohe after gang violence. Crying woman asked rape-accused Dr to stop. Customs have seized more than 700 kilograms of cocaine in a shipping container, breaking the record for a border seizure that was set just two weeks ago.

The container was on board a vessel that left South America in January 2022 and arrived in Tauranga, with Customs officers ready to inspect the consignment. Customs had already identified the container as a potential risk using "intelligence and targeting indicators".

The haul is estimated to have a street value of NZ$280 million, according to customs. This extremely significant seizure, the second within two weeks, highlights how transnational organised crime groups are actively trying to exploit New Zealand. . Click here RNZ news
